LTDT / DRIVER GUIDE

That pay number needs a few more questions.

Published October 28, 2026 · LTDT Recruiting

Compare how the work is paid, what the estimate assumes and which terms are actually confirmed.

A big weekly number gets attention. It does not explain the job. Before comparing two offers, find out what each number includes and what has to happen to reach it.

Start with the pay structure.

Hourly, mileage, percentage and mixed pay each work differently. Ask which miles or hours count, how work is recorded and which duties have separate compensation.

If the figure is an estimate, ask what it is based on. Typical miles? A certain schedule? A particular account? Ask whether the quoted amount is gross pay and what deductions apply. Keep estimates separate from written guarantees.

Work through a slower week.

What happens when freight is light, the truck is down or you spend hours waiting? Ask about detention, breakdowns, layovers, canceled runs and any minimum-pay conditions. Get those terms for the specific position.

Take bonuses apart.

How much is paid, when is it paid and what could make it disappear? Ask whether you must remain employed for a set period or repay money if you leave. A bonus is a separate line in your comparison.

Put time next to the money.

Look at days out, expected duties, home time and the commute. A larger gross figure may come with a schedule you do not want. A smaller headline may come with a work pattern that suits you. You need the details to decide.

Write the answers down. If something is unclear, ask before you apply or accept. LTDT can help you compare current job requirements and the terms available through the authorized recruiting process; the carrier confirms the offer.
